Tokyo Girl In London

I left Tokyo when I was 15 years old and have been in London for about 2 years. Since 2000, I don't know how many times I travelled between UK and Japan! As a Fashion Promo and oversea student,I began my 'search' of 'very English' and 'very English Fashion'.

I came across 'James Smith & Sons'; an umbrella company established in 1830. When my friends in Tokyo ask me what is it like in the UK, I would say 'Rainy and grey most of the time, i just can't handle my hair'. When I saw these fabulous umbrellas from James Smith & Sons, I thought 'Maybe these rainy days would not be so bad with them'.
From my point of view, English people are very open to other cultures and fashion and I thought these umbrellas would lighten up their rainy day. How much fun would that be, if every one had umbrellas like these! Like flowers blooming under the grey sky. Let's take advantage of the typical weather!

Central Saint Martins Graduate Shows

Thursday 25th May, the graduating classes of 2006 everywhere are preparing to end their university studies and launch themselves into the big wide world. None so much as the design students at Central St. Martins as today sees the debut of their final collections on the catwalk. The eagerly anticipated, much acclaimed, consistently outward and trendsetting in terms of fashion was about to be upon us. So understandably the tension hangs heavy in the air as the lights go down and the first fashion Women's wear student's creations glide down the catwalk. And then we were off...

The longest of the three shows featured more than 50 students, roughly 500 pieces of imagination in less than 2 hours. A long time for a restless audience but the students broke up the time with dramatic entrances, UV lit plastic creations and doll-like models. Hermione De Paula from Print-wear, a personal highlight, created a line of lingerie. Her own models tottered down the catwalk skipping, playing and flirting in the most beautiful bearly-there creations with black lace, crystal and gravity defying head-wear.

Bold patterns were regular features throughout the Print and Knitwear shows. Other trends emerging were oversized handbags, students across the board donned their models with giant purses (Serafina Sama and Pam Leung) . Many students made a feature of ingenious footwear. Victoria Aylwin matched her garments with birkenstock-esque sandals elevated onto high rubber stands, some used converse or doc martins but the platform high heel ran down the catwalk in as many shapes and colours as it has been made.

English heritage and the city of London had a subtle presence throughout, specifically with Eri Umezawa. The knitwear student who's bus inspired head-wear sparked smiles of recognition throughout the audience. One print collection was made from of 3D fabrics, which the front row enjoyed through 3D specs. The more theatrical performances stood out for their originality though the entire show, from make-up to music, was perfectly choreographed. Individual soundtracks seemed to melt magically into each collection perfectly, some using video projections to illustrate their ideas further. Even a one person tent in the Menswear show! Gingham fabrics featured prominently in menswear, but one more daring collection experimented with gender stereotypes, and included corsets and laced shirts.

All three finales didn't disappoint with the fantastical creations from Yang Du and Karen Karam who both, curiously, used horses as a main feature. We were left dazzled by the skill of the talents in our midst.

The front row sparkled with familiar faces of three years worth of tutors who determine their final grades. Mothers, fathers, uncles, grannies dogs and daughters piled into the show room. All three of the shows left not a seat to spare. Diversity was key as we were treated to everything from parasols to dog-wear. and they boast tailoring and attention to detail most fashion houses would be proud of. Their eclectic blend of multi cultured talents and home grown designers never fails to blow us away and this year was no exception. They await to see who will exhibit in the press show on the 5th of June, which will show case only 40 students it's fair to say once again St. Martins unleash another generation of life into the fashion industry. Congratulations class of 2006, go forth, design and prosper.

BLACK'S BACK? It Never Departed

Champagne anyone? A toast is in order, a toast to the one staple item that all women (should) have in their wardrobes. To the little black dress, that this year has its 80th birthday.
It's Paris in 1926. Coco Chanel, up and coming French designer introduced 'The Ford' dress. A black dress. A dress which from then on she would be famous for. It was the first example of 'ready to wear' fashion as the economic depression forced restraint on a post war world. The dress became uniform: practical, a master at covering up dirt and inexpense, while simultaneously being the height of Parisian Chic.
Prior to this fashion revolution black was the colour of grievers, of clergy and of 'a world below stairs'. Chanel brought it out of mourning and to life. This dress along with her other collections though designed for women of leisure and wealth were easily copied for the mass market. The appeal existed to a wider demographic which explains the whirlwind effect.
Fashion was now in overdrive and the black dress stood firm throughout history. Dior's New Look of the 1940's marked the end of the frugal wartime years, he doused fashion with luxury femininity and yards and yards of black fabric.
In the 1950 the age of the movie star no one can deny it's power and presence on screen. In Hollywood with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Rita Heyworth raising hem lines in order to win roles and shaping sex symbols that we still look to today and in film Noir where the sultry female in a black dress became an essential part of the genre's vocabulary. Onto the 1960's when the epitome of style and chic emerged. Undoubtedly the image of Audrey Hepburn sauntering down 5th Avenue at dawn in a floor length black silk Givenchy gown will remain an iconic image.
The dress has been reinvented, re stitched re arranged and up and down every red carpet ever and yet refuses to retreat from the fore front of the fashion industry. From Betty Boop to Ben de Lisi, from Elizabeth Hurley to Plastique, Clara Bow to the Queen of England, it seems everyone has done it. With new designs coming in for the autumn/winter 2006 from Alexandre Herchcovitch featuring predominantly black dresses it seems it hasn't done yet. Thankyou chanel, for 80 years of easy elegance. We look forward to 80 more.

Return of the Dinner Dance

The trend of the dinner dance has returned to Londons West end in the form of The Pigalle club. Picadilly Circus is the home to the stylish thirties inspiried venue where you can enjoy a meal, cocktails and live entertainment followed by dancing. The entertainment ranges from burlesque to a pink suited bara shop quartet and a swing band.
The club is a new project from the people who brought us Ladbroke Groves Tenwest and the Bloomsbury Ballroom - Its easy to see the connection, when you see the decor. With rumours of performances from Shirley Bassey and Will Young the Pigalle club is a camp dream come true.

Manchester the City of Dreams, or so the ball footers might say. Provides an original shoppers playground for those who want something unique and quirky and ultimately retro. The store Rags and Bitches by Flic Everett of Sex Column fame it the epitome of the mentality. The shop itself on Tib Street central Manchester is retro as they come embracing the return of the Biba vibe housing all that is rare and unusual. This place has taken shopping to a new level. not only to shop...but to swap. This store hosts clothes swapping events. 'Swappers' take a selection of unwanted but well kept pieces along to the venue. 15 Max. Check them in at the desk and then are set free into the racks of others unwanteds. You know someone's dirty penny can be another's hidden treasure. With this in mind you have free reign to rummage through with greed but without guilt knowing that you aren't spending money and technically you won't be any clothes down. You may feel a tear appear when you spot a 27 year old making off with that skimpy denim shirt dress you never quite had the nerve to wear but you'll realise that all isn't lost. Your own gem of discarded fashion will probably be just like magic exactly what you need. Aside from the monstrous pair of leather flares with flames creeping up the legs the selection was impressive. Parties are rare as the colourful array of jackets information is available in-store, as for us southern fairies we must wait in vain for it to travel further south. Hopefully we won't be waiting too long.

Penguin Boutique

Penguin Boutique is located one minute walk from West Hampstead Tube Station. It cannot be missed as the decoration of the shop is just fantastic. They have evening dresses,tops,skirts,accessaries and jewellery, that are bought from France,Italy and some from Japan. The owener, Colin and Brenda, go and buy all those beautiful clothes and accessary every month.
The shop is decorated by Colin who once was an interior designer. His inspiration is the European girls who dress individual and unique style and interesting shapes of clothes. Also well-dressed young ladies.
As well as the clothes and decoration of the shop, Colin and Brenda are very nice people to chat and ask some advise from!

LETTERS FROM LONDON

Not believing a gig could possibly start at 8pm I turned up ever so slightly late...
Letters from London were midway through their set, just old enough to smoke and have sex, but giving a very impressive performance in London’s West End venue Metro. This stage has seen the likes of Karen O, Courtney Love, The Kills and Bloc Party. Letters From London hail from my hometown in Kent; it bought back nostalgia for the up and coming scene back home. Speaking to the boys after their performance we got some photos and some interesting conversation as Scarlet and I were getting steadily slurred....

Hot...skinny ties, pink t-shirts, the horrors "not overly keen on the music but the style is good". Reading festival, they are all going. "Girls in corsets". And then the conversation turned to the attractiveness of female stars. My main concern at the moment is trying to decide between...Jemina Pearl or the legend that is Karen O.... It was almost unanimous that newcomer and Be Your Own Pet female lead Jemina was definitely the best. The debate took a turn to The Raconteurs or The White Stripes; it was a definite White Stripes based answer. But I wanted to know about Meg. Interestingly pretty "apparently she's locked in a box somewhere" that I doubt but the decision was decided she wasn’t interesting because "that’s just a nice way of saying ugly". Influences and albums ranged from Metallica to Ok computer and The Libertines up the bracket. Diverse and mixed tastes are good things to posses in a continuously changing fickle finger of the music industry.

They were genuinely nice boys, young and talented. Still naive (which believe me is a good thing) all with girlfriends and I swear one of them said, "don’t smoke its bad for you", as me and Scarlet puffed away swaying to the sound of the other bands playing. NOT JUST A PRETTY SCARF

As I’m sure everyone has noticed, there has been a recent fad for wearing Palestinian scarves.

What fascinates us about this trend is the lack of background knowledge of the people wearing them! If you like them fair enough, but you should know about the statement you're making! so we at fashionmademedoit thought we'd fill you in:

“The traditional Palestinian headdress has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people against the Israeli occupation. From political rallies to talk shows, supporters of the Palestinian cause have begun donning this traditional scarf as a show of solidarity. The scarf itself is known commonly as the "kuffiyeh," but may also be called the "hatta" or the "yashmagh."

There are mixed feelings about the wearing of these scarves as a fashion statement. Some think their political associations are now obsolete, others argue that they project a strong message.

“I am telling you this as a habitant of an ex-USSR-country: old communist signs have no significance whatsoever. Sure, you can always try to wear them as an expression of political alignment, but the deepest significances (for the majority, at least) are cheap laughs and some retro-flavour.
Same goes for the rag, wich is somekind of trend-cloth anyone can wear. Sure, the scarf must have a meaning of some sort, but I bet Laura, 16 years, or any other western shemag-wearing person would not know the hidden messages behind the piece of cloth…Sorry to be uneducated, but to me, it is only a cloth. Could it be, that the scarf has lost it’s meaning? It’s importance is lost. It is like any other scarf- at least for the majority.”

“The “kaffiyeh” is the most recognized symbol of support for the Palestinian intifada. The use of a “kaffiyeh” must be considered as a strong and aggressive political statement.”

DIRTY DIDZ

After a blinding set performed by in my opinion the most beautiful man in the world and his new best friends, I caught up with the bassist, ex cooper temple clause member... Didz. It was post Dirty Pretty Things gig in Cambridge last Sunday and obviously i had to ask the all important question of what is hot and what is not, i got some rather insightful answer....

hot..."eggs, on your face, being thrown at you all down the side of your face."
and dare i ask whats not hot??? "bad eggs."

Insightful and intesting his chat was nice and friendly offered cigarettes and beer from the tour bus...i drove home buzzing with excitemnt after the fantastic peice of music i had just witnessed wearing a blow up cowboy hat that a 12 year old tried to fight me for.

Stocks are designed and imported from Asia this is reflected in the prices. The gold embellished cropped jacket was £120 but for those with a more modest budget a fish string coin purse is only £6.50!
The current collection they have is more 'Spring in the City' rather than catering for the recent wave of sunshine we've had, but we were assured more seasonal pieces would be arriving soon.
Their original shoes were what caught our eye. Asian designer Kuji Kuga's collection ranges from flat plimsoles bowed and jeweled, wedges, and the recently favored Mary-Janes. A Sweet Selection of costume jewelry, feather earrings and crusty gold rings were the icing on the cake...just lay off the butterflies.

Ellie Jauncey

Ellie Jauncey is just finishing her BA degree at Manchester Metropolitan University where she has studied Textiles specialising in knitwear. Her final collection is a beautiful range of delicately made knitwear. She has created a range which looks entirely unique, each piece is different and has a quirky characteristic demonstrating Ellie's flare for individuality. Lola and Scarlet have both become big fans of her work, and not suprisingly Ellie has just been offered a contract in London with Nicky Dupont (incase you didn't know Nicky Dupont is a hugely renowned and respected designer within the knitwear industry.) It is definitely safe to say watch this space, and you heard it from us first.

The Hat Show London 2006

The name being a slight give away but surprisingly enough this show showcases....hats. The Menier gallery creates the right setting for this exhibition which offers both vintage head-wear and 15 young international milliners who aim to combine quality with contemporary design. A hat lovers paradise only improved by the Chocolate factory cafe next door. The sponsors 'THE HAT magazine' provided a display of back dated covers dotted around the displays.
Joy Scott who provided at collection for the show was worth a look with her ornate miniature hats using animal prints and decorated with spirals, feathers teamed with dramatic photography. Encased in a glass box was Jonathan Smith's first prize entrry into the Royal College of Art. A curious creation that looked strangely like an octopus wearing a LBD...
In it's entirety the show was very decorative, like a ladies boudoir with hats displayed amongst hat boxes bird cages and bouquets. It was indeed ornate but serves a good cause as the £1 entrance fee went to Macmillan Cancer Relief and Paintings in Hospitals, so besides being value for money it got the good deed of the day done with....

Dior Cruise Collection

Galliano presented the Dior Cruise Collection on the runway for the first time this week. A mixture of trouser and skirts suits, trench coats and evening dresses, it was surprisingly wearable for a Galliano collection. The separates did not always complement each other but the metallic skinny trousers and the gold dress worn by Heather Marks stood out as key pieces. Alec Wek also looked stunning in a yellow strapless dress “edged with sequins that echoed the [New York] skyline silhouetted outside”.

Alice McCall

After a string of successful shows in London fashion week, Alice McCall is beginning to really make her mark. The Times featured her with her equally beautiful and talented, designer sister in a piece on fashionable siblings. Her clothes have shown up to various events on the backs of the likes of Jules Oliver and Topshop and other high street shops have almost exclusivly ripped off her every design.
She is starting to move into the lifestyle/designer bracket that is honed by one other Alice in the fashion biz (Temperley). Personallly im pleased and hope that she expands and ventures into the diffusion lines, etc like so many of todays young designers.

Even though they are from February, here's some gorgerous images from her Autumn/Winter collection. In my opinion the best selection of wearable, fun dresses around, the type of thing you could wear to work, sunday lunch or clubbing, just remember to wash them in between.

Calm After the Storm

May Day bank holiday is to summer, what Friday night is to a weekend. All that hope and promise. All over the country we exposed our mottled white skin in the glaring sunlight, sat huddled in damp back gardens and famed the flames of the first barbecues of the year. Along with frozen picnics and premature garden parties inevitably comes booze, for the first time we can really understand why tramps use spirits to ward off the cold nights.
After a particularly excitable weekend, the perfect salvation was found in a new night a Brixtons Ritzy Cinema. The chilled out cinema played host to a calming DJ set and live music against a background of illustration and short films. The crowd looked tired but content from a heavy weekend, but soldiered on with the drinking; crammed out onto the opened balcony. What a lovely evening guys, perfect end to the start of summer.

Two Rivals : One Catwalk

Tonight, London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins battled it out in Cafe de Paris on the catwalk. Both the colleges from the University of the Arts were represented by a handful of current and ex students, to provide a lighthearted night of entertainment. The intimate atmosphere was created by a barely raised short catwalk in the centre of a packed dance floor with crowds even standing on the staircases to be a part of the action that night. Wine was flowing amongst the trendy gathering and glitter was falling from the hands of the models.

Diesel Launch Party

The guest list was full, the doors were tight but somehow even unknown to ourselves we got in. Guests were served individually wrapped sandwiches and cocktails into the early hours of the morning at the safari themed party.
Music was courtesy of Mylo as three dance floors were filled with very sweaty guests.
The packed V.I.P area was home to regular party people including Peaches Geldof, Camilla Fayed and Graham Norton, but no sign of Johnny Depp.

FAMILY

We pushed our way through the beautiful people but we got in. The rumours were true and a lucky audience danced to the early hours with Bjork.

The fashion was on top form, making the evening for people spotting and watching all the more interesting, lost of neon’s, glitter, hats and headresses, stripes and spots, eye make up and big hair. It was awash with colours and twinkling blacks; people were dressing to get noticed. The waif like figure of Gareth Pugh was roving around, dressed all in black, ribs peeking through a slashed vest. Curls were a statement too, on boys mostly. Rumours were rife with sightings including editor of Pop, Katie Grand, even Hollywood actress Thora Birch was said to be behind the decks at some point.

The venue was Bar Music Hall, Curtain Road in Shoreditch. Plenty of room, and the toilets reminded me of swimming changing rooms, apart from the resident artist painting murals in the corner on anything by the looks of it, including peoples bodies. The music was completely mixed, ranging from chav pop Usher to Hard House. An eclectic mix but did we expect anything less from the Icelandic artist. It was entertaining and most importantly fun. There was another rumour that all the tunes were not being pumped through turntables but, I-tunes and a laptop. I didn't get close enough to be able to justify this comment; the sweaty crowds barred my view. Nevertheless the tunes did their job. The celebrity status pulled a mammoth interest and crowd.

We all left arm in arm after having a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Sunday Best

Last weekend was the host of a debut theatre event in London’s Eastend. In the depths of a cool Shoreditch bar, actors and drama enthusiasts crammed in to share ideas and show their work on the tiny stage. Fuelled by happy-hour beers and trays of home made cakes, London’s first open mike performance sessions was born.

It kicked off with a political piece, then comedy, and finally to a cheering crowd, a Westwood clad burlesque dancer. There was a real buzz, and everyone felt like they were in on a secret much like the writers and artists of 30's Berlin or London's very own Bloomsbury set.

Friday May 5th saw American Apparel throw a party, in fact 3 parties, and a brilliant knees up was had by all.
All 3 were secret and guest list only but blagging and using charms is in our blood. Over 50,000 people crowded into London's Trafalgar Square this Saturday the 29th April in a free music event promoting equality and an end to intolerance. Organisers hope the day will help to sway votes this Thursday, to stop any power going to the BNP.

Tokyo girls and boys (I'm sure most of Japanese girls and boys) love going for Karaoke with bunch of mates,it doesnt matter if you are an amazing singer or not.No matter how long I have been in UK,I am a Tokyo Girl!When I was stuck in the English country side in my early days I would not dream of going to Karaoke in UK. But now,my girl friends and I have occasional singing session.It is great as it is a Japanese Karaoke place.The songs are available both Japanese and English. Although it is a bit pricey(from£12- during the weekdays 12.00-17.00pm) compare to the one in Japan but we still have so much fun!
